The Plan
Three days is the minimum you need to see Rome's essentials without feeling like you are running a marathon between monuments. The key is organizing by neighborhood, not by a random checklist. Day 1: Ancient Rome — the Colosseum underground, Roman Forum, and Trastevere dinner. Day 2: Vatican and Centro Storico — the museums, Sistine Chapel, Pantheon, and Piazza Navona. Day 3: Food and Neighborhoods — a Trastevere food tour, the Jewish Ghetto, and a farewell aperitivo in Monti.
Every recommendation is a place I have actually been to, with real prices and honest opinions about what is worth your time.
The Itinerary
Ancient Rome & Trastevere
Full Experience ticket: hypogeum tunnels, arena floor, and top-tier panoramic views. Arrive when doors open for the best light and smallest crowds.
Included with Colosseum ticket. Walk Via Sacra past the Temple of Saturn and Arch of Titus, then climb Palatine Hill for sweeping views.
Best carbonara in Centro Storico. Also try the burrata with anchovies. Arrive before 12:30 or expect a wait — no reservations for lunch.
Walk through the Orange Garden for panoramic views, then look through the Knights of Malta keyhole — St. Peter's dome perfectly framed at the end of a hedge-lined avenue.
Trastevere institution for cacio e pepe, carbonara, and amatriciana. No reservations, cash only. Queue forms at 7 PM for 7:30 service.
Vatican & Centro Storico
Book a guided skip-the-line tour for the full experience. Gallery of Maps, Raphael Rooms, and the Sistine Chapel. Use the exit door on the right side of the Sistine Chapel to walk directly into St. Peter's.
Free entry. See Michelangelo's Pieta (first chapel on the right), then climb the dome — 551 steps, but Rome's best panoramic view.
Rome's best pizza al taglio. 72-hour fermented dough, creative toppings, sold by weight. Eat standing — there are no seats.
Free entry (timed reservation required). Best-preserved ancient Roman building. The dome's oculus is the only light source — visit when the sun is high for the beam effect.
Admire Bernini's fountains, then duck into San Luigi dei Francesi (free) for three Caravaggio paintings. The Calling of Saint Matthew is staggering.
Visit Trevi after dark when the fountain is illuminated and crowds thin. Throw your coin. Then dinner at Armando al Pantheon — family-run since 1961.
Neighborhoods, Food & Farewell
Guided 3-hour tour: suppli, fresh pasta, pizza bianca, porchetta, local cheeses, and wine. You learn Roman food culture from the inside and you will not need lunch.
If you have room, try carciofi alla giudia (Jewish-style fried artichoke) at Nonna Betta. Crispy, golden, unique to Rome. Explore the Portico d'Ottavia ruins and Teatro di Marcello.
Rome's coolest neighborhood. Vintage shops on Via del Boschetto, independent bookstores, street art. Pick up Italian coffee, artisan pasta, or ceramics as gifts.
Rome's most creative artisan gelato. Try Kentucky (tobacco and dark chocolate) or seasonal fruit sorbets made with whole fruit.
Monti's living room. A tiny bar spilling onto the street with locals drinking spritzes and eating one-euro bruschetta. The most Roman way to end your trip.
